ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION

This raw, fast-paced drama follows three small-time crooks who plot to steal a valuable coin collection, only to find their loyalty and integrity tested as the plan unravels. The piece is subversive in its ruthless critique of the American Dream. The play, as relevant today as it was when it debuted,  strips away the veneer of business ethics to reveal a brutal, dog-eat-dog world where loyalty and trust are sacrificed for self-gain. With sharp dialogue and complex character dynamics, Mamet’s masterpiece dives into perceptions of integrity and success.

This production contains strong language and mature themes. Viewer discretion is advised.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORS

AMERICAN BUFFALO

American Buffalo is a play that cuts close to the bone. A raw, unfiltered look at ambition, trust, and desperation. It’s just three men and a single, small plan. But what’s really on the table is something far deeper: value.

We chose this play not just for its sharp, subversive dialogue, its grit and naturalistic poetry, its deeply flawed characters, but because it demands a close, uncomfortable proximity to questions of worth. What are objects worth? What is loyalty worth? What are people worth? And ultimately what happens to our souls when everything feels transactional?

Mamet’s language—sharp, stammering, explosive—lays bare the aching desire to matter in a world that too often forgets people like Don, Teach, and Bobby. In that sense, it fits squarely within our 2025 Subversive Season, which explores the gray areas beneath surface certainties. This play doesn’t offer clean answers, but it does invite you into the messy space where meaning, morality, and survival collide.

WJCT Studio B makes this intimacy unavoidable. You’re not observing from a distance: you’re in the junk shop with these men—listening, watching, implicating. The heat, the silence, the volatility: you feel it in your bones. That’s the kind of theatre we strive to make at Lumen Rep: immediate, human, and charged with consequence.

Lumen Rep is proud to bring this level of professional, Actors’ Equity theatre to Jacksonville. It’s a rare thing, and it matters. We believe this city deserves artistic endeavors that resource artists so that those artists can create things that provoke, question, and risk. Thank you for being part of it.

As a stage manager, she finds joy in creating a family with each new cast and crew, and in witnessing the actors' transformations throughout the show.
