ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION

Widely regarded as one of the most gripping and provocative plays of the contemporary stage, The Pillowman is a darkly comic psychological thriller about storytelling, state power, cruelty, imagination, and the dangerous afterlife of art. At once brutal, funny, and deeply human, McDonagh’s play confronts the uneasy relationship between creative freedom and moral consequence. One of the most celebrated voices in contemporary theatre and film, Martin McDonagh is also known to broad audiences for acclaimed films including In Bruges, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and The Banshees of Inisherin.

Set in a totalitarian state, a fiction writer is brought in for interrogation when a series of disturbing crimes begin to echo the violent content of his stories. As the investigation deepens, the play moves into unnerving and unexpectedly moving territory, raising questions about censorship, authorship, trauma, and whether stories merely reflect the world or help shape it. And it raises the ultimate question: what do we owe to the truth?

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

On THE PILLOWMAN by Martin McDonagh

I've been thinking about why stories exist.

Not what they mean, or what they're worth — but why human beings, across every culture and every century, can't seem to stop making them. We tell stories when we're safe, and we tell them when we're terrified. We tell them to children before bed. We tell them to ourselves when the truth is too hard to hold.

The Pillowman asks a question I couldn't shake from the first time I read it: what do we owe to the things we make? And what does it mean when the things we make outlive the time in which we created them — when they go out into the world and do things we never intended?

Martin McDonagh doesn't let anyone off easy. Not his characters, not his audience, and honestly, not his director. This play is funny and brutal and heartbreaking, sometimes in the same breath. It takes the act of storytelling — something we tend to treat as safe, even noble — and puts it in an interrogation room.

I believe human beings are made to create because we were made by a Creator. That's not a comfortable theology when you're sitting with a play like this. It means creativity isn't passive. It carries weight. It has a moral life of its own.

That's what we've been sitting with in this rehearsal room. Not trying to solve the play. Just trying to be honest with it.

I hope you'll be honest with it too.
